In between studying I try to see as much art as possible. My favorites include the Brooklyn Museum, the Isamu Noguchi Museum and, of course, the Met. I like to scope out the galleries but with 800+ in the city, I get a bit overwhelmed.Kate Alexanderhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15418528562089904655noreply@blogger.comBlogger52125tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6330599406301882704.post-46422061940416044342010-06-11T12:00:00.000-07:002010-06-11T12:28:14.781-07:00The "Key" to Public Art in NYCA time-honored tradition of recognizing dignitaries by giving them a key to the city has become the theme of a new public art project in NYC. In collaboration with the nonprofit group <a href="http://creativetime.org/about/index.html">Creative Time</a> NYC-based artist <a href="http://www.paulramirezjonas.com/">Paul Ramirez Jonas</a> created "<a href="http://pursuitist.com/arts/paul-ramirez-jonass-key-to-the-city-unlocks-secret-doors-in-nyc/">The Key to the City</a>," which runs through Labor Day.<br /><br />Keys (available for pick up at a <a href="http://www.timessquare.com/">Times Square</a> kiosk until June 27th) unlock hidden museum rooms, private gardens, and more (specific sites include a concealed door to an exhibition of Faberge jewels at the <a href="http://www.brooklynmuseum.org/">Brooklyn Museum</a> and a private vegetable pot at a community garden in the Bronx). The interactive project encourages people to give the keys to others in honor of a certain deed or trait.<br /><br />Jonas discussed his unique project,<br /><br /><span style="font-style: italic;">"One to one, one at a time, thousands of keys will be bestowed by thousands of people for private reasons that deserve to be recognized."</span><br /><br /><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_Bloomberg">Mayor Bloomberg</a> also commented on "The Key to the City," stating,<br /><br /><span style="font-style: italic;">"[The project] will provide New Yorkers with a new way to experience some of our cultural organizations, city landmarks and small businesses."</span><br /><br />The keys unlock about two dozen "doors" in locations throughout the 5 boroughs - which must be visited during their open hours. Each master key can open all of the locks. While the initial publication run is for 25,000 keys, more will be created if needed to match demand.<br /><br />Get involved in the intriguing project; pick up a key today and explore the city like never before.<br /><br /><a href="http://www.artdaily.com/index.asp?int_sec=2&int_new=38459">READ</a> the entire article associated with this post<br /><br /><a href="http://www.mutualart.com/EventsResults/-public-art-/?q=%26quot%3Bpublic%2Bart%22+inmeta:End_Date:2010-6-11..+inmeta:Start_Date:..2010-7-31&requiredfields=CountryId:8.StateId:173.CityId:325">SEE</a> other public arts projects throughout NYC<br /><input id="gwProxy" type="hidden"><!--Session data--><input onclick="jsCall();" id="jsProxy" type="hidden"><div id="refHTML"></div><input id="gwProxy" type="hidden"><!--Session data--><input onclick="jsCall();" id="jsProxy" type="hidden"><div id="refHTML"></div><input id="gwProxy" type="hidden"><!--Session data--><input onclick="jsCall();" id="jsProxy" type="hidden"><div id="refHTML"></div>Kate Alexanderhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15418528562089904655noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6330599406301882704.post-40949697246537420062010-05-13T12:53:00.000-07:002010-05-13T13:25:43.812-07:00Three Films, Two Thumbs Up, One Wilcox ExhibitionIf you're looking for a romantic comedy or horror flick, go check out your local movie theater. But, if you're looking for an engaging film exhibition, you may be interested in visiting Metro Pictures... a fabulous venue in Chelsea that's known for its film and video installations.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhHwYup25SeDJK0lR3oiXw1f7LRGNsOCxWbWZTilJRJnqGoVFD3VXqGN524XSNSWCBpmOpN5kC6cVU0QnkCvA63A2d82tKHJpDM8shdIVEIxFsPYYxkys-N9Y21JMA59Q4sivrPoR5RnQ8/s1600/film1.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 222px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhHwYup25SeDJK0lR3oiXw1f7LRGNsOCxWbWZTilJRJnqGoVFD3VXqGN524XSNSWCBpmOpN5kC6cVU0QnkCvA63A2d82tKHJpDM8shdIVEIxFsPYYxkys-N9Y21JMA59Q4sivrPoR5RnQ8/s320/film1.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5470853305762304898" border="0" /></a>This month <a href="http://www.metropicturesgallery.com/index.html?mode=artists&object_id=5&view=bio">T. J. Each of the films is being projected in its own room of the gallery, and accompanying photographic pieces are mounted in strips of freestanding, hinged wooden panels or folding screens in the associated rooms. In the films, Wilcox engages in his singular method of filming idiosyncratic subjects scrutinizing his art works as to reduce and refine each of his works to a visual and narrative essence. After all, the Met is universally known as a prestigious and comprehensive mega-museum displaying pieces from its vast collections and showcasing tons of eclectic exhibitions that present art from different centuries and various cultures. (For example, the Met is <a href="http://www.metmuseum.org/special/index.asp">currently exhibiting</a> "Sounding the Pacific: Musical Instruments of Oceania" along with "Playing with Pictures: The Art of Victorian Photocollage" and several other wildly diverse shows).<br /><br />However, it seems the Met is taking its admiration for uniqueness and desire to present art in all its forms to a new level: the roof! New Jersey-bred identical-twin-brothers / artists <a href="http://www.starnstudio.com/">Doug and Mike Starn</a> have created "<a href="http://www.metmuseum.org/special/se_event.asp?OccurrenceId=%7B9C6923D2-D348-4761-BEB3-A943934068D2%7D">Big Bambú: You Can't, You Don't, and You Won't Stop</a>," a complex installation that's part performance, part architecture, and part sculpture.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhPLx_3uJfRJo_sulkECRd06kSAAuhRNg_oVZJN3wW0tpVtYcVbVt-1xwFWF3licmGPo0pEFEOW0tNKTRrA8AD1ufHimqmGyPts7gHPv-Us_nwNkEX5D1t1CZ-Te9vDwWoIhs9FYlbCsdc/s1600/bamboo4.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 259px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhPLx_3uJfRJo_sulkECRd06kSAAuhRNg_oVZJN3wW0tpVtYcVbVt-1xwFWF3licmGPo0pEFEOW0tNKTRrA8AD1ufHimqmGyPts7gHPv-Us_nwNkEX5D1t1CZ-Te9vDwWoIhs9FYlbCsdc/s320/bamboo4.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5465315034942806930" border="0" /></a>The installation, which opened yesterday, is actually a work in progress. The public will be able to witness "Big Bambú's" metamorphosis throughout the summer, as rock climbers continually add to the work until it forms a cresting wave covering an area of 100 x 50 feet and soars 50 feet above the Met's roof.<br /><br />The 48 year-old brothers, who have worked together as artists their entire lives, developed the idea for "Big Bambú" after finishing their project "Sphere of Influence," a 1991 creation that consisted of a rotating globe about 14 feet in diameter made of metal pipe clamps juxtaposed against sheets of transparent photographs. "Big Bambú" is organic, and Doug Starn recently stated that its about, "... all the things in your life, including those that aren't planned."<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEglUdSzfkODdGDua2EJzVh9QiqIXDxUf4FWQ3FIwZ9GYTgERSyYVSIdK7c9KYNuILu1S0_1M5dTylhsP9cBWHx6CAmdbEtlsj335TpGJT9tnEY-GgtMOIRiwfUiko5nHRTfhGn9gHkrI-Y/s1600/bamboo3.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 136px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEglUdSzfkODdGDua2EJzVh9QiqIXDxUf4FWQ3FIwZ9GYTgERSyYVSIdK7c9KYNuILu1S0_1M5dTylhsP9cBWHx6CAmdbEtlsj335TpGJT9tnEY-GgtMOIRiwfUiko5nHRTfhGn9gHkrI-Y/s320/bamboo3.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5465314888044223778" border="0" /></a>The artists chose <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bamboo">bamboo</a> as their medium because its light, yet incredibly strong (and can withstand all types of weather). The installation is titled after after the brothers' nicknames in high school, <a href="http://www.rhapsody.com/cheech-and-chong">Cheech and Chong</a>, whose albums included one called"Big Bambú."<br /><br />Museum officials are anticipating that some 400,000 people will see "Big Bambú" throughout its duration (it will be dismantled at the end of October). All visitors will be able to stroll the roof's main level. However, the paths above will be limited to guided tours of 10 to 15 people, twice an hour.<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEib-JKh5SikTwEt9-r0qXMK3lkF0K1Zi7K2tUEoIGknK6eW-F9aH0UclmAeRIKejTQqNusBbMGycFu71bETGzxrEvvvaiO78M0fSjRIvzWQqry7Ee4Lv5iXKhjd5rmPmHmgdDIcI_rCj4A/s1600/bamboo1.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 177px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEib-JKh5SikTwEt9-r0qXMK3lkF0K1Zi7K2tUEoIGknK6eW-F9aH0UclmAeRIKejTQqNusBbMGycFu71bETGzxrEvvvaiO78M0fSjRIvzWQqry7Ee4Lv5iXKhjd5rmPmHmgdDIcI_rCj4A/s320/bamboo1.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5465314224987589346" border="0" /></a>The project is quite the daring feat - even for the Met. While there have been sculpture exhibitions by artist such as <a href="http://www.jeffkoons.com/site/index.html">Jeff Koons</a>, <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ellsworth_Kelly">Ellsworth Kelly</a> and <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roy_Lichtenstein">Roy Lichtenstein</a> on the roof, this is by far the most ambitious roof-top exhibition.<br /><br />So why did the Met agree to such a thing?<br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg7JdTO7X_qIYuyV4eCcEWv4Sn0KYe4-NiDISmog5_KfF3AdOqr-Ahg1vWeFmVaDWfWSLAAERpv_GttWfbw2Bu0iQJxwLU3r_lRSOwaOWfgR1oAOJ484396RdBklSIPkDNJre-V3iulxzQ/s1600/bamboo2.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 224px; height: 338px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg7JdTO7X_qIYuyV4eCcEWv4Sn0KYe4-NiDISmog5_KfF3AdOqr-Ahg1vWeFmVaDWfWSLAAERpv_GttWfbw2Bu0iQJxwLU3r_lRSOwaOWfgR1oAOJ484396RdBklSIPkDNJre-V3iulxzQ/s320/bamboo2.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5465314665359354482" border="0" /></a><br />Associate curator of modern and contemporary art at the Met, Anne L. Rauzier's works are groundbreaking and combine both the big picture and close-up views, opening up new pictorial possibilities in composition and scale. His <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/C-print">C-Type photographic prints</a> are of extremely high quality. Rauzier presents his photos in editions of 8 and has executed them in a format that can be printed as large as 30 by 10 feet without altering the quality of the image.<br /><br />Rauzier remarked,<br /><span style="font-style: italic;"><br />"When you are looking at a Hyperphoto, at first you think you are looking at an enlargement of a panoramic photograph. Like the thousands of excited art-enthusiasts, I too trekked to <a href="http://www.piers9294.com/">Piers 92 / 94</a>, crossing the scary West Side Highway to reach the massive Armory Show 2010.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgboAZqbrNv3wZV1G7kO3ZJtVnF9ip1oCx5XP_NKlOKXwcetoPoo-lNE-wxg7TltE62HvJSXjiYrlG8MxcavYxyEjeUM9rxV_deNy2kiWSVUKNBronTWYcNM-w_BDDN5iTY43HAG-6KRTk/s1600-h/armoryshow.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgboAZqbrNv3wZV1G7kO3ZJtVnF9ip1oCx5XP_NKlOKXwcetoPoo-lNE-wxg7TltE62HvJSXjiYrlG8MxcavYxyEjeUM9rxV_deNy2kiWSVUKNBronTWYcNM-w_BDDN5iTY43HAG-6KRTk/s320/armoryshow.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5447172511792024578" border="0" /></a><br />I had never been to the Armory Show before, but it definitely lives up to its "NY's largest contemporary art fair" title. I was overwhelmed at the <a href="http://www.thearmoryshow.com/cgi-local/content.cgi?pg=3&p=96">hundreds of galleries</a> and thousands of paintings I saw... loving some, hating others, and not knowing what to think of a few "overly-contemporary" pieces. (I also have to admit I was a bit offended by one piece - a painting of a black swastika with a yellow background at gallery <a href="http://nicoleklagsbrun.com/">Nicole Klagsbrun</a>'s booth). Regardless, while some reviews say exhibitors "played it safe" this year, I had a wonderful and enriching experience (and kind of wonder what previous less tame armory shows have been like...)<br /><br />Switching gears now - If you've visited the Armory's Website, you've probably wondered why there are images of either a screw sticking out of a wall, dripped paint on wood or another seemingly un-artistic image. These are actually the works of <a href="http://www.thearmoryshow.com/cgi-local/content.cgi?pg=9&p=90">Susan Collis</a>. Each year the Armory Show <a href="http://www.thearmoryshow.com/cgi-local/content.cgi?pg=9&p=41">commissions an artist to "create the visual identity" of the fair</a>, and this year the selected artist was <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Susan_Collis">Susan Collis</a>. Her screw in the wall work, "As Good as it Gets" (below) is the epitome of her creations, as Collis is known for crafting art out of every-day / mundane objects. The artist recently revealed a little bit about the unconventional way she gathers materials for her pieces.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi5_UVuqs3o54-fxzvBAOPen0BNAdNpWnu3-xyRvA5A9J6_kamqHFJuHujDnMySKRsNVWUlT3eD-gcOSdEIcxckbfRXPEq2if3w_Z0qPukkFSfW2biF2GvMxvptt9agjPUcu3UjBtLqB9Y/s1600-h/asgoodasitgets.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 289px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi5_UVuqs3o54-fxzvBAOPen0BNAdNpWnu3-xyRvA5A9J6_kamqHFJuHujDnMySKRsNVWUlT3eD-gcOSdEIcxckbfRXPEq2if3w_Z0qPukkFSfW2biF2GvMxvptt9agjPUcu3UjBtLqB9Y/s320/asgoodasitgets.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5447172705294583026" border="0" /></a>The British artist finds her objects (screws, nails, bits of wood splattered with paint, etc.) by <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dumpster_diving">dumpster-diving</a>. She tells <a href="http://nymag.com/daily/entertainment/2010/03/the_armory_shows_commissioned.html">NY Magazine</a> that dumpsters are called "skips" in England. Collis admits her assistants help with the dirty work, but she definitely delves in as well in the process (which she refers to as "skip-trawling").<br /><br />Collis remarks:<br /><br /><span style="font-style: italic;">"I look at these really disgusting pieces of wood and I imagine that rats had peed on them or something ... in the studio, we held them with rubber gloves the whole time. I do actually encourage my assistants to wear gloves. Tillmans' images portray beauty and nonchalance – accomplished through the photographer’s use of <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monochrome">monochrome colors</a> and abstract and fragmented styles. He seeks to create uncontrived pieces and sticks by his belief that photographs should occupy wall space more like a sheet than a piece of art (this is why he frequently leaves his photos unframed).</span></p><p class="MsoNoSpacing" style="font-family:trebuchet ms;">

So save your spending money and explore NYC's "Free Art Scene."<br /><br /><a href="http://nymag.com/srch?t=event&N=261+711+69+782+707&No=0&Ns=nyml_sort_name%7C0">NY Magazine lists 21 free art events</a> in Manhattan. All of the artist's photos were shot in the LA neighborhood where she grew up and the models' clothes came from an actress friend of her grandmothers, adding a uniquely personal touch to the show. The <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frank_Lloyd_Wright">Frank Lloyd Wright</a>-designed museum, which opened in 1959, has forced artists and architects to challenge their own creative minds and produce unique solutions to the building's central void and rotund shape. Their various responses have led to some extremely memorable exhibition designs and site specific solo shows over the past several decades.<br /><br /><div></div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjg5M8zMtVdYIYuOl9TpdFZCxtKYlSIK-SxyhDnSPZJwlEwBsVdZWAmmT0EulZTbxWL9U8utPckNprqtSdpiBB0z6ROkSaZDqCvikHRA5Nv3S_EkKWquGY25Sx06bXJLGghAPOGsm8C_DQ/s1600-h/guggenheim_3.jpg"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5418547989573902482" style="FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; WIDTH: 253px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 213px" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjg5M8zMtVdYIYuOl9TpdFZCxtKYlSIK-SxyhDnSPZJwlEwBsVdZWAmmT0EulZTbxWL9U8utPckNprqtSdpiBB0z6ROkSaZDqCvikHRA5Nv3S_EkKWquGY25Sx06bXJLGghAPOGsm8C_DQ/s320/guggenheim_3.jpg" border="0" /></a>Thus, it is only appropriate that the Guggenheim celebrates its 50th anniversary in a way that showcases the masterfully complex design of the building. The Guggenheim Museum has invited over 200 artists, architects and designers to produce design and display works for the exhibition, titled"<a href="http://www.guggenheim.org/new-york/exhibitions/upcoming/contemplating-the-void">Contemplating the Void: Interventions in the Guggenheim Museum</a>," on view from February 12 to April 28, 2010. The much anticipated display will emphasize the rich and diverse range of proposals that have been received from an eclectic array of creative minds.<br /><br /><div> </div><div>To read more about this exciting exhibition and the artists whose work will be exhibited, click <a href="http://www.artdaily.com/index.asp?int_sec=2&int_new=35062">here</a>.<br /></div></div><div></div>Kate Alexanderhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15418528562089904655noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6330599406301882704.post-1551318738844347912009-11-03T11:10:00.000-08:002009-11-03T11:41:33.124-08:00The Bauhaus<div style="text-align: left;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:arial;">Looking ahead, and looking forward, to next week...</span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:arial;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><i><b><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:arial;"><a href="http://www.moma.org/visit/calendar/exhibitions/303">Bauhaus 1919-1933: Workshops for Modernity </a></span></b></i></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:arial, serif;"><b><i><br /></i></b></span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:arial;">opens at the </span><a href="http://www.moma.org/"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:arial;">Museum of Modern Art (MoMA)</span></a><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:arial;"> on Sunday, November 8th.</span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 298px; height: 420px;" src="http://www.moma.org/images/dynamic_content/exhibition_page/16729.jpg?1248103631" border="0" alt="" /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:small;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:arial;"><br /></span></span></div><div><blockquote></blockquote><blockquote><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:small;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:arial;">From the </span></span><a href="http://www.moma.org/visit/calendar/exhibitions/303"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:small;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:arial;">MoMA</span></span></a><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:small;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:arial;"> website: </span></span></blockquote><blockquote><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:arial;"><br /></span></blockquote></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style=" color: rgb(51, 51, 51); line-height: 17px; "><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color:#000000;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:arial;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:small;"></span></span></span><blockquote><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:small;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color:#996633;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:arial;">This survey is MoMA’s first major exhibition since 1938 on the subject of this famous and influential school of avant-garde art. An exhibition at <a href="http://www.hauserwirth.com/">Hauser & Wirth</a> - a recent and exciting addition to the New York art gallery scene - is at the top of my list! Three contemporary artists have been commissioned to reinterpret Allen Kaprow's famous work from his 1961 New York "happenings" on their 50th anniversary. In addition to the date, historically significant to this artistic recreation is the location. The space where <a href="http://www.artdaily.org/section/news/index.asp?int_sec=2&int_new=32221&b=expressionism">Kaprow's Environment Yard</a> originally appeared (formerly the Martha Jackson Gallery) is now occupied by the Hauser & Wirth gallery.<br /><br /><br /><a href="http://www.hauserwirth.com/exhibitions/425/allan-kaprow-yard/view/">Allan Kaprow YARD</a><br />September 23, 2009 - October 31, 2009<br />Hauser & Wirth New York<br />32 East 69th Street. I can hardly believe summer is about to end. With all of the rain we've had in the city, it almost feels like we went straight from April showers to Autumn (minus a few weeks of hellish humidity and heat). I am really excited, not only to break out my fall clothes and order a Pumpkin Spice Latte, but to get back into opening season at New York galleries. Pretty much starting next week, most galleries will be opening their new September shows, and I can't wait. Here's a few that I will definitely be checking out:<div><br /></div><div><div><a href="http://www.farmanigallery.com/en/Exhibit/JanvonHolleben/JanvonHolleben.php">Jan von Holleben, Mutatis mutandis</a></div><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 503px; height: 334px;" src="http://www.artcat.com/system/exhibits/000/010/005/eccee0e4d9e23b86ddfaf9e84f2034fc4b384047.original.jpg" border="0" alt="" /><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div>Farmani Gallery</div><div>DUMBO</div><div>111 Front Street, Suite 212, 718-578-4478</div><div>September 10 - October 3, 2009</div><div>Opening: Thursday, September 10, 6 - 8:30 PM</div><div><br /></div><div><div>- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - </div></div><div><br /></div><div><a href="http://www.klausgallery.com/exhibitions/2009/david-Gilbert-ian-pedigo-jessica-stockholder/">David Gilbert, Ian Pedigo, Jessica Stockholder</a></div><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 500px; height: 357px;" src="http://www.klausgallery.com/d/photos/hires/BMx1QpXQ.jpg" border="0" alt="" /><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div><div>Klaus von Nichtssagend Gallery</div><div>Williamsburg / Greenpoint / Bushwick</div><div>438 Union Avenue, 718-383-7309</div><div>September 11 - October 11, 2009</div><div>Opening: Friday, September 11, 7 - 9 PM</div><div><br /></div><div>- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - </div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div><div><a href="http://www.luhringaugustine.com/">Janine Antoni, Up Against</a></div><div><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhpMk_FwFH2Ax_P_qeYIEMXNYiTq_Op0RaAMbheZ-1Db7j7Ygs2co-J18F_FfKis2tr6axQZ857-FsxvW7f9AdWspJaxLVgef-XCzxrnV-acPorrWiXNaPaGMaCP7uLN3qZTAUp_r48LBc/s400/Picture+1.png" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5376155382484863202" /></div><div>Luhring Augustine Gallery</div><div>Chelsea</div><div>531 West 24th Street, 212-206-9100</div><div>September 12 - October 24, 2009</div><div>Opening: Friday, September 11, 6 - 8 PM</div></div></div></div>Kate Alexanderhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15418528562089904655noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6330599406301882704.post-31354442675227250402009-08-19T13:48:00.000-07:002009-08-19T14:59:51.290-07:00The Met Exhibiting Vermeer's Milkmaid<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiHj3M_fa8cepNBHQI9kzft7Yuw939GpnceFuA7Vh8I2-rlteMkw6xUt56T_31SwWBdVFfROItvzsvXCHx5E4Bo6dtFKvUBQfkmt_tKne5uWIC_a6Sg-ojakduU-C9knBVwFxU78I9Xy-w/s1600-h/VermeerMilkmaidCa1660AmsterdamRMA350.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 251px; height: 277px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiHj3M_fa8cepNBHQI9kzft7Yuw939GpnceFuA7Vh8I2-rlteMkw6xUt56T_31SwWBdVFfROItvzsvXCHx5E4Bo6dtFKvUBQfkmt_tKne5uWIC_a6Sg-ojakduU-C9knBVwFxU78I9Xy-w/s400/VermeerMilkmaidCa1660AmsterdamRMA350.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5371782883926348978" border="0" /></a><br />I'm incredibly excited for this upcoming show at <a href="http://www.metmuseum.org/">The Metropolitan Museum of Art</a>- they're receiving <a href="http://www.essentialvermeer.com/catalogue/milkmaid.html">Vermeer's <span style="font-style: italic;">The Milkmaid</span></a> from Amsterdam <span id="txtDescription" width="100%" style="text-align: justify; line-height: 18px;">where it has been at the <a href="http://www.rijksmuseum.nl/">Rijksmuseum</a>.<br /><br />This will be the first time the painting has traveled to the USA since the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1939_New_York_World%27s_Fair">1939 World's Fair</a>. One of my favorite art resource websites, <a href="http://www.mutualart.com">MutualArt.com</a>, just restructured its subscription service, allowing free access of the website without having to have a member profile (which is actually free anyway).<div><br /></div><div>Keeping up with the art world is not easy, especially in a city like New York, with hundreds of galleries and dozens of museums. In order to stay up to date with the openings, events, happenings and news of the New York and international art scene, I check MutualArt.com every week because they have comprehensive profiles on galleries, art fairs, museums, artists and a free article database.</div><div><br /></div><div>I signed up for a basic membership, which is free: you fill out a profile about your art interests, what artists or cities you want to track, and every week MutualArt emails you a list of events, venues, and artists that might peak your interests, based on your member preferences. And for the person who <i>really </i>wants full access to the website, there's a premium membership (offered now at a special price $19/month or $199/year) that <a href="http://www.mutualart.com/static/membershipTypes">has the works</a>.</div><div><br /></div><div>Anyway, I find the website pretty helpful and easy to use, so thought I'd share. Stay in the know--<a href="http://www.mutualart.com">check it out!</a></div><div><br /></div>Kate Alexanderhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15418528562089904655noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6330599406301882704.post-68852763273788283272009-07-29T19:22:00.001-07:002009-07-29T19:49:50.322-07:00ART Santa Fe Highlight: David Henderson<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgm_2DIDKoMgWLk2iCZkUCG9tbRcsgL7P57fx3UZoTCS4BUhpvljRm7pfaNoQeqLZPqhRUIp0cWwon5l_RgfrOYDapKJ9r8plE4BZOGMLfkSIOGGRLmnpjma8X0Q-ZWxpp5dSQNLlVh99I/s1600-h/Santa+Fe+007.jpg"><img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 267px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgm_2DIDKoMgWLk2iCZkUCG9tbRcsgL7P57fx3UZoTCS4BUhpvljRm7pfaNoQeqLZPqhRUIp0cWwon5l_RgfrOYDapKJ9r8plE4BZOGMLfkSIOGGRLmnpjma8X0Q-ZWxpp5dSQNLlVh99I/s400/Santa+Fe+007.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5364076176299518194" /></a><br />This past weekend I had the pleasure of attending ART Santa Fe, the first non-New York City art fair I've attended (click here to read my <a href="http://www.articlesbase.com/art-articles/thoughts-on-art-santa-fe-1073582.html">full review of the art fair</a>.)<div><br /></div><div>One of the highlights, in my opinion, of the fair's offerings were the acrobatic sculptures of David Henderson, which toe the line of sculpture and installation. Using a very lightweight carbon fiber plastic, Henderson pushes the envelope of tension, gravity and spatial relations. The sculptures just gently kiss the wall at one point, creating an uneasy tension and awe in the spectator. Their unique design also allows the works to attach to the walls in innovative and flexible ways.</div><div><br /></div><div>Despite the heavy, marble-like appearance of the pieces, this one on the left weighs six pounds, and can be held in one hand. And they are surprisingly sturdy--according to the gallerist who chatted with me, on opening night of one Henderson's pieces was knocked off its pedestal, bounced down the hall before rolling to a stop, in one piece.</div><div><br /></div><div>The gallery that represented him at ART Santa Fe was a local one, <a href="http://www.williamsiegal.com">William Siegal Gallery</a>. You can also check out Henderson's work at <a href="http://davidhenderson.org/">http://davidhenderson.org/</a>. </div>Kate Alexanderhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15418528562089904655noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6330599406301882704.post-37664875877471249172009-07-21T17:46:00.001-07:002009-07-21T18:04:50.628-07:00Structured Simplicity at Dumbo Arts Center<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgqojcFE7TteSmMLA2M3v3WLC5n8r3VWLP0ZbjSp8J4OkbEnaQj7m1Dr4D1uyfbOfs26dGad5dsMk2J7viWqF9YkAGXfMfiwYBAgQiHCYIZ6rYNVRSrxkEjIbpNaNb2J7N_skcpbtMw17c/s1600-h/yoes_small.jpg"><img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgqojcFE7TteSmMLA2M3v3WLC5n8r3VWLP0ZbjSp8J4OkbEnaQj7m1Dr4D1uyfbOfs26dGad5dsMk2J7viWqF9YkAGXfMfiwYBAgQiHCYIZ6rYNVRSrxkEjIbpNaNb2J7N_skcpbtMw17c/s200/yoes_small.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5361083856495826498" /></a><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:medium;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:georgia;"><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style=" ;font-family:Georgia, -webkit-fantasy;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:medium;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:georgia;">There's still a few weeks left to see "Structured Simplicity" at the </span></span><a href="http://www.mutualart.com/Organization/Dumbo_Arts_Center/60F6165ED78D0405"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:medium;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:georgia;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color:#3333FF;">Dumbo Arts Center</span></span></span></a><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:medium;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:georgia;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color:#3333FF;"> </span></span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:georgia;">(show closes August 9). Kicking off the series are two bands, Titus Andronicus, and Real Estate. According to the Whitney website,<div><br /></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style=" ;font-family:Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:small;">Titus Andronicus are from Glen Rock, New Jersey, and take their name from the Shakespearean tragedy. Their sound is punk-infused Replacements-esque pop music with screaming vocals, layered guitars, and songs about suburban malaise....Real Estate, led by singer/guitarist Martin Courtney, also has roots in the Garden State. Their songs evoke visions of tract housing, basement band practice, and wasted youth, mixing languid psychedelia, muted vocals, and a boomy undertow of drums. </span></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style=" ;font-family:Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;font-size:11px;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style=" ;font-family:Georgia, -webkit-fantasy;font-size:16px;"> </span></span></div><div><div>How can you say no?
